A good crowd turned up to hear the lightning talks (15 June) on spirited Ashfield people, places and events. Talks included a personal reflection on a first job in Ashfield in 1966 as well as local identities such as P.L Travers [writer of Mary Poppins], Mei Quong Tart [mandarin, tea merchant and philanthropist], Daphne Akhurst [Australian tennis star] and Ernest Fisk, Chairman of (Amalgamated Wireless (Australasia), AWA. Other talks focused on places of significance including Highway Ave and the old AWA site on Parramatta Road.
Christine sets the scene with a sense of place
Thanks to the Ashfield and Summer Hill Toastmasters clubs, Ashfield Local History Librarians and to all who participated in the Lightning Talks at Thirning Villa. It was a great community event on which to finish my artist in residence (AIR) in the Inner West. Check out the call for the next round of artist in residence. I highly recommend it.
